Out here in the Idco Estate in South Balanda, things feel very different from the big cities. We’re right in the middle of the industrial heart of Talcher, in the Angul district of Orissa. It’s a place where you can’t really avoid the dust or the sound of heavy machinery nearby. The office is a simple structure within the estate. It’s where the real work happens, away from any polished showrooms or fancy glass buildings. We deal with a lot of heat here, and the ground is almost always stained with red dirt. Our day starts early because that’s when the trucks are moving. Inside, it’s mostly just desks, chairs, and a lot of filing cabinets. We focus on the logistics of Gulf Oil Corporation around these parts. There isn’t much to see if you’re looking for a tour. It’s a functional space. We eat our lunch out of tiffin boxes and talk about the local news or how the roads are holding up. The estate itself is quite large, so we’re just one small part of a much bigger industrial machine. It’s not a glamorous job, but it’s what we do. We’ve been at this spot for quite some time now and everyone in the Balanda area knows where to find us if they need to talk shop about shipments or supplies. It is just a practical workplace for local people.
