Vedanta

Vedanta Aluminum is located out in Lanjigarh, which is in the Kalahandi district of Orissa. It is a fairly remote area compared to the big cities, but there is a lot going on here. The landscape is quite beautiful with the hills around us, though we spend most of our time inside the facility buildings. It is a big operation, but our daily life is made up of small things. We walk between the different sections and talk to the guys on the floor. There is always a lot of noise from the machinery and the trucks moving back and forth. The air smells a bit metallic, which is something you get used to after your first week. We have a simple office space where we keep our logs and schedules. It’s not a place with plush carpets or fancy art on the walls. We have whiteboards with lists that get erased and rewritten every day. Lunch is usually a quick affair so we can get back to what we were doing. In the evenings, the sky over Kalahandi gets really dark and you can see all the stars, which is a nice way to end a long shift. We are just here doing the work that needs to be done. It’s a busy place but we find our own pace amidst all the heavy industrial activity.
