Our office is in Quarter Number D-22 of the Maihar Cement colony. This is over in Sarla Nagar, which is part of Maihar in the Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. It is a very specific kind of place to live and work. Since it’s a cement colony, everything has a bit of a grey tint from the dust, and the streets are laid out in very neat, predictable rows. We spend our days inside this quarter. It’s a standard layout, with a couple of rooms that we’ve turned into our work area. We have a small kitchen where we make tea about four times a day. The sound of the factory is always there in the background, like a low hum that you eventually stop hearing. We don't have much in the way of decoration. There are some old chairs and a big wooden table where we do most of the sorting. Most of us have been around here for a long time, so we know all the shortcuts through the colony. It’s a quiet existence for the most part. When the shift changes at the plant, the streets get busy for twenty minutes and then go silent again. We just keep working through it all. It’s a simple, honest way to spend the day in Satna. We don't need anything fancy to get our jobs done correctly.
