In the town of Jharsuguda, Orissa, we are one of the main places people think of when they talk about aluminum. This town has grown so much because of the industry, and we are right in the thick of it. It is a place of heavy trucks, train tracks, and a lot of noise. Working here means you are used to the sound of the plant twenty-four hours a day. We have shifts that never end, so there is always someone coming or going at the gates. The ground is often that reddish color you see in this part of the country, and it gets on everything you own. Our office is a plain building where we manage the staff and the daily output. It is not very fancy, just some desks and chairs and a lot of filing cabinets. We focus on the day-to-day grind and do not worry much about how things look to outsiders. Most of us have been here for years and we know the routine like the back of our hands. When the monsoon hits, the yard turns into a bit of a mess with all the mud, but we just keep the metal moving regardless. It is a tough environment but there is a sense of pride in just getting the job done without any complaints. We are just a local bunch of people keeping the aluminum business running.
