Our place, Allison Transmission India Pvt Ltd, is located at A-21 in the SIPCOT Industrial Park over in Oragadam. If you’ve ever been to this side of the outskirts of Chennai, you know it’s basically just rows and rows of industrial plants. It’s a bit out of the way, so the commute can be a real headache depending on the traffic. We’ve got a decent-sized setup here, but it’s all very practical and focused on the work. There isn’t much in the way of shops or cafes right outside our gate, so we mostly stick to what’s inside the park. The dust from the construction and the heavy trucks is pretty much constant. Inside the building, things are a bit more controlled, but it’s still an industrial environment through and through. We spend our days dealing with the technical stuff and making sure the parts and units are handled correctly. It’s not the kind of job where you sit around much. Everyone has their station and their specific tasks to handle. Sometimes it gets a bit repetitive, but there’s a sense of rhythm to it that you get used to after a few months. The weather can be pretty brutal, so the air conditioning inside is definitely appreciated by everyone on the staff. We just try to get through the daily log and make sure nothing gets backed up for the next shift. It's a steady way to make a living.
