Down on Munsi Premchand Street in Uttar Dinajpur, you’ll find our jute operation. It’s a gritty kind of job and our hands are usually pretty rough from handling the fibres all day long. We don't have a fancy storefront, just a large space where we stack the jute and get it ready for whatever it’s needed for. The weather in Dinajpur can be quite humid which makes the jute heavy to move around. We have a few guys who have been with us since the beginning and they can sort through a pile faster than anyone I know. The street outside is usually busy with people walking by and the occasional cart. We keep the big doors open to let some air in while we work. There is always a lot of lint floating around so we try to keep things as clean as we can, though it’s a losing battle most days. We don't use much in the way of high-tech gadgets, just old-fashioned tools and our own strength. It’s a simple life on Munsi Premchand Street. We start when the sun comes up and we finish when the light starts to fade. There isn't much more to it than that. We take pride in just showing up and doing the work that needs doing without making a big fuss about it. It’s just how things are done here in our part of the district.
