Finding us at Katra Hira Lal isn't always easy if you aren't used to the narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk. We are at 675, right in the middle of Nai Sarak where things are always moving. It’s a bit of a tight squeeze inside with all the fabric rolls stacked up against the walls. Some of these shelves have been here since the shop first opened and they still hold up okay. We spend the morning unpacking bundles and trying to keep the dust off the materials. The traffic outside is constant, mostly rickshaws and people carrying heavy loads on their shoulders. It gets loud but you get used to it after a few years. We drink a lot of tea while we wait for the next delivery to arrive. Sometimes we have to move everything around just to find one specific pattern a customer asked for. It's dusty work and our hands are usually covered in lint by lunch. The lighting in the back could be better but we know where everything is by heart. We don't bother with fancy computer systems much, just a ledger and some pens. It's just how things run here at Tayal Textiles. We keep the doors open even when it rains, though we have to be careful about the water splashing in from the street. It’s a busy life but we enjoy the neighborhood.
