Motor Sales Co has been sitting here at shop 126 in the Guru Nanak Auto Market for quite some time. If you know Kashmere Gate, you know it’s a bit of a maze. Our shop isn't the biggest one on the block, but we manage. We handle all sorts of motor supplies. I usually get in around ten, though the market starts waking up much earlier. There is a specific rhythm to this place. You hear the metal shutters going up one by one all down the row. My space is filled with catalogs and a computer that’s seen better days. Customers come in with greasy hands or a part they’ve pulled off their engine, asking if we have a replacement. Sometimes we have it right there, and sometimes we have to wait for a delivery. The tea guy comes around every couple of hours, which is the highlight of the afternoon. We sit on plastic stools and talk shop. It’s a lot of manual work, moving boxes and checking inventory lists. The air in Guru Nanak Auto Market always smells like rubber and engine oil. It’s not the kind of place where you’d wear a suit. I wear my old work shirt most days. We just try to help people find what they’re looking for so they can get back on the road. It’s steady work and it keeps us busy from morning until the sun goes down.
