We set up Kikan-Jewels at 65/D-7, Sector-6, Rohini quite some time ago. Being in a residential sector means we see the same faces almost every day. It’s a bit quieter than the big markets in the city, which is nice because we can actually hear ourselves think. The shop isn’t huge, but we’ve made good use of the space we have. We’ve got some counters for showing the pieces and a small area in the back for repairs and adjustments. It’s a family-run kind of thing, so there’s usually one of us sitting by the door greeting people. We don’t use any high-end lighting or fancy carpets; we just keep the place clean and the jewelry organized. Most of our work comes from neighbors or people who live a few blocks away. They come in for small things, maybe a ring resizing or just to see what we’ve put in the window this week. We don’t really believe in big sales pitches. If someone likes something, they buy it. If not, we just have a chat and they go on their way. It’s a relaxed atmosphere. We open up after breakfast and stay until the streetlights come on. It’s a decent way to earn a living, being part of the local neighborhood like this. We just take it one day at a time here in Rohini and keep the shop running as smoothly as we can.
