Chandra Kant Textile

You have to head to the 2nd floor at 1240 Maliwara to find Chandra Kant Textile. We are right by the LAL Dharamsala in Chandni Chowk. If you’ve been to this part of Delhi, you know the lanes are so narrow you can barely walk through with a bag. We spend our days up here, away from the worst of the street level noise, but you can still hear the bells of the rickshaws. The stairs are steep and old, so we tell everyone to watch their step. Our space is filled with huge rolls of fabric. It’s dusty work, moving these heavy things around all day. We use big wooden tables for cutting and measuring. The ceiling is high, but we’ve got shelves stacked all the way up. It’s not a place with air conditioning or soft carpets. It’s a workplace. We handle a lot of wholesale stuff, so there are always ledgers lying around and pens that have run out of ink. Sometimes we get a leak in the roof when it rains hard, so we have to move the cloth quickly. It’s a bit of a struggle sometimes, but this is where the business has been for years. We don’t have a fancy entrance. You just walk up the stairs and you’re there. We work until it’s dark and then navigate the crowded streets to get back home.
