Monday Spice

Monday Spice is located out in Bhebia, right near the Chowmatha. We are in the Basirhat area of 24 Parganas North. It’s a bit of a trek to get out here if you aren't from around these parts. We mostly deal with local spices that grow in the region. The shop is quite simple, just some wooden counters and a lot of jars. We spend a lot of time talking to the local people who pass by the Chowmatha. It’s a social spot as much as a business. We get the spices in bulk and then spend the afternoons sorting them. It’s a lot of sitting on the floor and picking through things to make sure they are clean. We don't have any high-tech equipment. It’s just us and the scales. Sometimes the dust from the spices makes us cough, so we keep the doors wide open for the breeze. The weather out here in Basirhat can be unpredictable, so we are always watching the sky. If it looks like rain, we have to move everything inside quickly. We don't have a website or anything like that. We just do things the old way. My kids help out after school sometimes, mostly just moving the lighter bags. It’s a slow pace of life, but we like it. We’ve been here for years and the community knows us well. It’s just what we do to get by every day in this little corner of the district.
