Highway Movers

Setting up shop in Belgharia was a choice we made years ago. We are located over at 24B/1 on M.B. Road in Kolkata. It’s a tight spot, especially when the big trucks are trying to park. Moving things is hard work, and our backs know it by the end of the day. We spend most of our time wrapping furniture in old blankets or carrying heavy boxes down narrow staircases. Kolkata has a lot of those old buildings where nothing fits in the lift, if there even is one. We don’t talk much while we’re working, just focusing on not scratching the walls. The office is small and usually filled with stacks of empty cartons and rolls of tape. Sometimes the weather makes things difficult, especially when the rain starts pouring down during a move. We just wait it out or cover everything in plastic. It’s not a glamorous life, being Highway Movers. We see people at their most stressed, surrounded by their whole life in boxes. We just try to get the truck loaded and get to the next place without too much fuss. There’s always tea nearby at the local stall when we take a break. We’ve been through a lot of rolls of packing tape over the years. This part of Kolkata is home to us, and we know these streets pretty well by now. We just take it one heavy sofa at a time and keep moving.
