Prime Mould & Dies

Down at C-115 in Sector-10, you’ll find Prime Mould & Dies. It is a workshop where we spend most of our time dealing with heavy metal and precision tools. Making moulds is slow work. You can't really rush it or the whole thing ends up being scrap. We have a couple of machines that have seen better days, but they still run true, and that is what matters to us. The floor is usually covered in metal shavings by noon. We sweep up when we can. It’s mostly just a few of us here. We don't wear suits. Usually, it’s just grease-stained shirts and sturdy boots. If you come by, you’ll probably hear the hum of the lathes before you even get through the door. We don't have a receptionist. If the phone rings, whoever is closest to it picks up, assuming they can hear it over the noise. People bring us drawings or sometimes just a broken part they need a new version of. We look at it, figure out how to cut the steel, and get to it. It’s honest work. Sometimes we get the measurements wrong on the first try and have to start over. That’s frustrating, but it happens. We just put another piece of stock in the machine and try again until it’s right. It takes patience to work in a shop like this, but we are used to the rhythm of the machines.
