There is a specific smell of leather that hits you the moment you walk up to the 3rd floor at H- 87. Here in Sector- 63, things move pretty fast, and we are usually right in the thick of it. Pretto Leathers is where we spend our long hours, often late into the evening when the rest of the building has gone quiet. Working on the 3rd floor is fine until the power goes out and we have to lug heavy hides up the stairs by hand. The workshop is full of specialized tools and heavy-duty machines that make a lot of noise. We don’t have much in the way of decoration, just some old calendars on the walls and maybe a few photos of our families near the desks. The floor is usually covered in scraps of brown and black leather that we sweep up at the end of the week. My hands are usually stained with dye or a bit rough from handling the materials all day. We spend a lot of time arguing over the best way to cut a piece to save material or checking the stitching on a bag. It’s a messy, physical job that requires a lot of patience. We just keep our heads down and focus on the benches in front of us. It’s not a clean or quiet environment, but it’s where we do our best work without any fuss or pretense.
