Out here in Mundka, things are a bit spread out. United India Lighting System is located at Plot No. 219 in the Swaran Park Industrial Estate. It’s quite a trek if you are coming from the main city, and the roads can be a mess when it rains. We’ve got a decent amount of space in the plot, which is good because lighting equipment takes up a lot of room. There’s always someone testing a ballast or checking the wiring on a new batch of fixtures. The humming of the lights is the background music to our lives. We have a small office area blocked off with some glass partitions, but most of the time we are out on the floor. It’s not particularly fancy. The walls could use a new coat of paint, and the desk in the corner has a wobbly leg we fixed with a piece of cardboard. We have a few guys who have been with us since we opened. We eat lunch together around a big table in the back. Sometimes the power goes out, which is ironic for a lighting company, but we just wait for the generator to kick in. It’s a lot of manual work, packing crates and loading them onto the tempos that come by in the afternoon. We stay busy and don’t really think about much else until it’s time to lock up. It is a long day but the work is steady.
