Sahaj Dyeing & Printing Works

Sahaj Dyeing & Printing Works is located in the basement of E-67 in Lajpat Nagar I. Being in a basement means we don't get much natural light, so we have to rely on those bright tube lights all day. It’s a bit of a tight squeeze down here with the printing tables and the drying racks taking up most of the floor. You have to watch your head when you are moving around some of the low pipes. The air is always thick with the scent of screen printing ink and the heaters we use to dry the fabric. We do a lot of the work by hand, laying out the cloth and applying the prints one by one. It gets pretty hot in the summer because the ventilation isn't the best in this part of the building. We have been in this basement for years and we know every crack in the floor. Most of our day is spent leaning over the tables or washing out the screens in the back sink. It’s a bit cluttered with pots of color and scraps of fabric everywhere, but we know where everything is. It’s a busy little spot and we usually have people dropping off rolls of plain cloth right at the entrance. We just keep our heads down and get the printing done before the evening rush in the market starts up.
