Mamta Hospital

Mamta Hospital in Kagag Nagar sits right at Ghandhi Chouk. We’re directly opposite the Rajasthan Sweet House Line, which is both a blessing and a curse because the smell of frying sweets comes right into our front doors. Ghandhi Chouk is the heart of the town, so there is never a moment of peace. You’ve got rickshaws honking and people shouting all day long. The hospital building is an older structure, and we’ve had to patch it up many times over the years. Inside, it’s a bit of a maze with narrow hallways and heavy doors. We have a small ward for patients who need to stay overnight and a couple of consultation rooms. The staff is like a big, messy family. We argue about whose turn it is to clean the break room and then we go back to work. We get patients from the local line houses and the surrounding villages. Many of them don’t have much, so we see some pretty difficult situations. The fans on the ceiling never seem to go fast enough in the summer. We keep a big water cooler in the corner for anyone to use. It’s a plain, functional place where the day is measured by the number of patients seen and the amount of tea consumed. It's dusty and loud outside, but inside we just focus on the people who walked in.
