Lakshmi Dass & Co.

We are located right on Post Office Street in Sadar Bazar. If you know the area, you know how packed it gets. Lakshmi Dass & Co. has been at number 293 for as long as I can remember. The street is narrow and there are always handcarts and motorcycles pushing past. Our shop is small but we use every inch of the walls for storage. It’s mostly us and a few helpers moving goods around. We don't have an air conditioner, just a couple of ceiling fans that hum all day. It’s loud and busy, but that’s Sadar for you. We deal with a lot of wholesale buyers who come in looking for specific things. Sometimes we have to dig through the back to find what they need. We keep our accounts in big ledgers. It’s a traditional way of doing things, but it works for us. We know almost everyone on the street. We share tea with the neighbors and complain about the traffic together. It’s not a place for someone who likes peace and quiet. We’re here from early morning until the shutters go down at night. There’s always something to unload or a customer waiting for a price. We just do our best to keep everyone happy and the stock moving. It’s honest work in a very busy part of town. You get used to the shouting and the dust after a few weeks of working here.
