You can find us on the first floor of Guru Nanak Auto Market in Kashmere Gate. It’s a crowded building, full of people looking for spare parts and tools. Our shop is number 37. It’s a bit of a climb up the stairs, and the hallway is often cluttered with boxes and old tires. Inside, it’s just shelves after shelves of engine parts and accessories. We know where everything is, even if it looks like a mess to someone else. The air always smells a bit like motor oil and old cardboard. We spend most of our day on the phone or talking to mechanics who come in looking for a specific bolt or gasket. It gets loud with all the shouting and the traffic from the street below. We don’t have much room to move around in the shop, but we make it work. Sometimes we have to tell people we don’t have what they need, and they have to go to another shop in the market. That’s just how it goes here. We’ve been in this same spot for a long time. The walls are a bit stained and the light flickers sometimes when the voltage drops. We eat our lunch at the main counter while waiting for the next customer to walk in. It’s a busy life, but it’s what we know. We just keep the shelves stocked and help the people who walk through the door. There is a guy who comes by twice a day selling tea in small glass cups.
