Hanuman Sahai & Co. is found on the first floor of 1227-A in Maliwara. This is deep in the heart of Chandni Chowk, so you can imagine the crowds outside. The lane is so narrow that two people can barely walk side by side sometimes. We’ve been here for many years, and the building itself is quite old with high ceilings and thick walls. We mostly handle traditional textiles and laces. Our main room is filled with large rolls of cloth and smaller boxes of trimmings. We don't have a modern showroom; it's more like a warehouse where we also meet our customers. Most of our day is spent unfolding fabric for people to see and then folding it back up neatly, which is harder than it looks. We keep a ledger on a low wooden desk where we write everything down by hand. It’s often loud outside with the shouting of coolies and the ringing of cycle bells, but inside we just focus on the task. We don’t have a website or anything like that. People know us because we’ve been in Maliwara forever and they know where to find us. We just try to keep a decent stock and be fair with everyone who walks through the door.
