We are located at 202/1 Linton Street in Calcutta. This is an old part of the city, and the building definitely shows its age, but it has a lot of history. Working for the Department For International Development as part of the British High Commission means we have a lot of different things going on. It is not your typical business office. We deal with various projects and coordination work. The street outside is usually full of life, with taxis honking and people walking by at all hours. Calcutta has a very specific feel to it, and Linton Street is right in the middle of it all. Inside the office, it is a bit quieter. We have high ceilings and old windows. We spend our days reading reports and talking to different partners about the work being done in the region. It is a lot of desk work and meetings, but it feels important. We don't have any fancy modern furniture. Most of the desks have been here for a long time. We have a small kitchen where we make tea and coffee during the day. Sometimes the rains are so heavy that the street outside floods a little, but we just keep working. It is a very grounded place to be. We are just a group of people trying to keep these international programs running smoothly from this little corner of West Bengal. It is a steady, quiet kind of daily routine.
