Operating a taxi service in New Delhi means you spend almost your entire life in the driver's seat. Amit Taxi Service is basically run out of our cars and a small spot where we coordinate things. New Delhi is a huge, sprawling city and the traffic is something you just have to accept. We know the shortcuts and the backroads because you have to if you want to get anywhere on time. It’s a lot of heat, dust, and the constant sound of horns. We don't have a fancy office with air conditioning; we’re usually out on the road or parked under a tree waiting for the next call. We drink a lot of chai at the roadside stalls while we wait. It’s an honest way to make a living, even if it’s tiring. Every day you meet different people, some in a hurry and some just looking at the sights. We keep our vehicles as clean as we can, but the city grime is a constant battle.
