Our spot is right in Dargamitta, directly across from the Government Hospital. Being so close to the hospital means we are always seeing people who need a way home or a transfer somewhere else. V K Reddy started this to help the local community get around when they are too sick for a regular car or rickshaw. It’s not an easy job, but it is necessary work for this part of town. We spend a lot of time waiting for calls and then rushing out when someone needs us. The traffic in Dargamitta can be a bit much during the peak hours, but we know the back ways to get through. We keep the ambulance parked where it’s easy to pull out onto the main road. The equipment inside is basic but it works for what people need. Most of our days are spent talking to families who are worried about their relatives. We try to be helpful without getting in the way of the doctors. It’s a small team here. We handle our own maintenance and cleaning. You won't find any corporate suits here, just guys who know how to drive and help patients onto the stretchers. The Government Hospital stays busy, so we stay busy too. Sometimes we take people quite far if they want to go back to their village. We don't charge anything crazy, just enough to keep the vans running and the lights on. It’s just honest work in a part of town that always has something going on.
