PAITHANI KALAKARI ASOCIATION

Down in Yeola, specifically on Kala Maruti Road, is where our association is based. We are at House Number 2295 near the Ganga Darwaja Road. Yeola is a place famous for its silk sarees, and that is exactly what our group is focused on. The Paithani Kalakari Association is made up of people who really care about the old ways of weaving. You can hear the rhythmic clicking of the handlooms coming from many of the houses around our office. It is a sound that everyone here grew up with. Our office is a simple, dusty place where we gather to look at new designs and check the quality of the silk yarn. We aren't a big factory with hundreds of machines. It is more about the individual skill of each weaver in their own home. We help get these handmade sarees to the people who want them. Sometimes the silk colors are incredibly bright, especially when the sun hits them. We check the gold thread work very carefully. If it isn't perfect, we don't let it pass. The roads in this part of town are very narrow and winding. It can be hard to find us if you aren't from here. We don't have a big sign or anything flashy. Just a regular old building where we do our daily work. We’ve lived in Yeola our whole lives. We know every traditional pattern by heart. It’s a slow, careful way to work, and we like it that way. We just keep the tradition going one saree at a time.
