If you head down to the Nice MIDC area, you’ll find us at Plot No. 3. We are right across from the Kumara Hotel, which is where most of the drivers grab their lunch. It’s a dusty spot, like most places in an industrial zone, and there’s always a truck or two idling outside our gate. The office isn’t much to look at, just a few desks, some old filing cabinets that squeak, and a calendar from three years ago still hanging on the wall. We spend most of our time on the phone or checking clipboards to see what’s moving where. It’s loud because of the machinery next door, so we end up shouting to be heard quite a bit. Sometimes the rain makes the yard a bit of a mess, but we just throw down some gravel and keep going. We’ve been operating out of this plot for a good long while now. People know us for being here every morning before the sun is even fully up. There is a tea stall around the corner where we get our morning chai, and that’s usually the highlight of the day before the chaos of loading starts. We don’t have any fancy computer systems; we mostly rely on our ledgers and knowing which driver is reliable. It’s hard work, but it’s what we do here in the MIDC. The metal gate at the entrance needs a bit of grease because it moans every time it opens, but it does its job.
