Our place is at No. 65 in the Market Yard at Lasalgaon. If you have ever been to this part of the country, you know it is all about the market. The yard is a massive, open space where trucks are constantly coming and going, especially during the peak seasons. Our office is right in the thick of it. It is a dusty environment because of all the activity and the nature of the goods being traded here. We have a simple room with a couple of heavy wooden desks and some stools for visitors. The phone rings a lot and there is always someone popping their head in to ask a question or check on a delivery. We start our day very early, usually before the sun is fully up, because that is when the market is at its busiest. By the afternoon, the heat can be quite intense, and the whole yard slows down just a little bit. We don't have much in the way of decoration, just some old photos and a clock that loses a few minutes every month. It is a practical life, centered around the rhythms of the market. Everyone who works here is used to the noise of the auctions and the smell of the produce. We are just one small part of the big system that keeps this market moving every single day.
