We have been running things here at Plot No. 27 for quite some time now. Satpur Colony is a quiet place mostly, but around our shop, it gets a bit noisy when the machines are going. It’s just how Ashok Nagar is, a mix of homes and small setups like ours. I usually start the day by opening the shutters early, around eight. There is always a lot of dust from the spices, so we spend the first hour just cleaning the counters and the scales. We don't have any fancy display cases or bright lights. Most of the spices are kept in large plastic drums or gunny bags stacked against the back wall. You can smell the turmeric the moment you walk in. Sometimes the neighbors stop by just to talk about the weather or the local news while they wait for their packets. We use an old ceiling fan that wobbles a bit, but it helps when the afternoon heat kicks in. It’s a lot of manual work, lifting heavy bags and making sure everything is weighed correctly. We don’t really do much advertising. People just know we are here because of the smell of ground chili in the air. My hands are usually stained yellow from the haldi by the time I head home. It is a simple life, but it keeps us busy every single day from morning until the sun goes down and we lock up for the night.
