Payal Tuition Class

If you know where Kamal Talkies is, then you’ve probably passed by our place near Kamal Chowk. We’re right by Mahatma Fule School in Nagpur. It’s a crowded part of town, so there is always something going on in the streets outside. The tuition class is tucked away in the building, so it stays a bit quieter once you step inside the room. We have rows of desks and some old cupboards filled with old tests and dusty textbooks. The light in the hallway flickers sometimes, and we’ve been meaning to fix it for a month. Payal handles most of the scheduling and the books. It’s a lot of work keeping track of who is coming for which subject every day. The students are mostly local kids from the surrounding apartment blocks. They bring their own snacks and sometimes they leave wrappers behind on the floor. We have a small desk at the front where we keep the attendance registers. It’s a very local feel here. It is nothing like those big centers in the city with their shiny floors and glass walls. Here, the floor is concrete and the walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint. But it works for us and the students. We spend our hours explaining math or science and drinking tea between the different batches. It’s a steady, simple life. People know us by word of mouth. We don’t spend much time on anything else but the daily teaching chores.
