At Geethanjali Gems we spend our days at No. 375 Avvai Shanmugam Salai in Meenakshipuram. It is a small shop but we have a lot of things packed into the glass cases. The street outside is usually quite busy and we see a lot of people passing by on their way to work. We opened up here because it seemed like a good spot to settle down. Most of what we do involves looking at small stones and metal under magnifying glasses. It can be hard on the eyes after a few hours so we take plenty of breaks to look out at the street. The shop doesn't have a lot of fancy decorations. We prefer to keep things plain so the items in the cases stand out. We know many of the families who live around Meenakshipuram and they often stop in just to say hello. My father started this and now I help run it along with a couple of other people. We don't have a big corporate office or anything like that. Just this one room where we do everything from cleaning the floors to talking to the people who come in. Sometimes the rains make the street outside a bit of a mess but we keep the shop dry and quiet. It is a peaceful place to work and we like the routine of opening up every morning and seeing what the day brings us.
