Khan Trading Company

Our shop is located in the village of Pitholao, right across from the bus stand. It’s a convenient spot because everyone passes by when they are traveling to or from Tehsil Mundwa. The building is an old one, and it feels like it’s been part of the landscape forever. We deal with various trading goods, so the inventory changes depending on the time of year. Some months we have sacks of grain piled up, and other times it’s different supplies for the local farms. It’s a very local way of doing things. We know most of the people who come through the door by name. When a bus pulls in, things get frantic for a few minutes with people jumping out to grab things quickly. Then it settles back down into a quiet rhythm again. We spend the downtime sitting on the wooden benches out front, watching the road and talking to the neighbors. There is always a layer of red dust from the village roads, but that’s just how it is here. We don’t have fancy computer systems for everything; a lot of it is still written down in big ledgers. It’s honest work that keeps us busy from sunrise until the last bus leaves in the evening. We just try to keep the shelves stocked with what folks around here actually need for their daily lives and hope for good rain this year.
