Ucmas Abacus

In Mayiladuthurai, over on Pasupathistreet in Koranad, is where Ucmas Abacus is located. The address is 609001 if you are looking for it on a map. It’s a small, focused place. You won't see big sports fields here. Instead, it’s mostly about kids sitting down and working with those abacus frames. You can hear the little plastic beads clicking together as the children move them up and down very fast. It’s quite something to watch. The office is simple, with just enough room for a desk and some chairs for parents to sit while they wait. We get a lot of kids coming in after their regular school hours. They look a bit tired sometimes, but they sharpen up once they start the mental math exercises. Pasupathistreet is a typical street with its own noises, but inside, it stays mostly quiet so the kids can think. The teachers here are patient. They spend a lot of time showing the same movements over and over until the students get it right. It’s not a fancy setup with high-tech gadgets, just simple tools and lots of repetition. We’ve been in Koranad for a while now, and most of the neighbors know us by the sound of the kids leaving in the evening. It’s a humble spot where a lot of thinking happens every single day.
