Subramani Jaggery

Subramani Jaggery is located at No:12, Pillaiyar Koil Street. This is right in the heart of Vettuvanam Village, near the Vettuvanam Post. Life here is pretty slow, except for when we are boiling the cane. You can see the steam rising from our shed from down the road. Most of the people around here know us by name. We don't have a big office or a reception desk. It is mostly just the production area and a place to stack the finished blocks. The street gets busy during temple festivals because of the Pillaiyar Koil nearby. We often have to stop work to let the processions go by. My clothes usually smell like burnt sugar at the end of every day. It’s a sticky business, and the heat from the furnaces can be quite a lot during the summer months. We get the raw sugarcane from the local fields around the village. Sometimes the delivery is late, and we just sit around the street corner talking. We don't use any fancy chemicals or machines that do all the work. It’s mostly just us watching the pans and making sure the fire is just right. People walk in off the street to buy a bit for their homes. We don't have fancy packaging either. It is just wrapped up and handed over. That is how things have been at our Vettuvanam spot for years. It's just simple work.
