Kalyani is a bit different from the rest of West Bengal because it feels a lot more organized and quiet. Our office at A-2/48 is where Hindustan Construction Company Ltd operates from in the Nadia district. It is a simple building and we have been here long enough that we feel like part of the neighborhood. The rooms are filled with metal filing cabinets and old wooden desks that have seen better days. We do a lot of our work on paper still, even though there are computers around. There is a specific rhythm to the day here, starting with the morning mail and ending with us double-checking the site logs. The weather in Bengal can be unpredictable, so we spend a lot of time talking about the rain and how it might slow down the concrete pouring. We don't have any big speeches about our goals or our history. We just focus on the task at hand and try to make sure everyone is doing what they are supposed to do. There are usually a few of us here, and we share a lot of stories about past jobs while we eat our lunch. It is not a polished corporate environment by any means. It is just a group of people who know a lot about building things and are trying to keep everything on track. We are just a local office doing what we know how to do best without any fuss.
