Mylapore is a busy place, and Salai Street is right in the middle of it. Our building at 26/29 is where we do all our home fashion work. It’s an old part of the city, so the streets are tight and full of life all day long. We focus on textiles for houses, things like curtains or covers, and we’ve been doing it for quite some time now. The office doesn’t have fancy carpets or anything. It’s mostly desks covered in samples and fabric swatches that we need to sort through. We have a small group of people who know their way around a sewing machine and a measuring tape. Sometimes it gets a bit loud with the street noise and the machines running at the same time, but we don’t mind much. It feels like we are part of the neighborhood. We don’t spend money on big posters or radio ads. Most of the people who come to us are regulars or they heard about us from their neighbors. We just try to get the stitching right and make sure the colors are what the person asked for. It’s practical work. Every morning we open up, have some tea, and get to the tasks on the list. It’s a straightforward way to earn a living, and we like being in this part of town where everything is within walking distance. We just keep our heads down and do the stitching.
