If you head over to Bakhri Tola in the Kesho district of Muzaffarpur, you’ll find us at Aftab Alam’s house. That’s where we run WANIYA BENEFIT NIDHI LIMITED. It’s a very quiet part of the area, away from the main hustle and bustle of the city. We have a small room dedicated to the fund where we keep all the records and the cash box. It’s nothing special to look at, just four walls and some sturdy wooden furniture. We spend most of our time answering questions for the people who live in the village. Since it’s a small community, we know who belongs to which family, which makes the work feel a lot more personal than a bank. We don’t use any complicated software; it’s mostly just pens, paper, and a basic calculator that’s missing the battery cover. Sometimes Aftab’s family brings us tea while we’re going over the entries for the month. It’s a nice way to spend the day. The light in the room isn’t the best, so we usually have to keep the door wide open. It lets in the dust from the road, but it also lets in a bit of a breeze. We don’t have a big staff, just a couple of us who know how to handle the books properly. We stay until the work is finished, whether that’s early afternoon or late into the evening. It’s a practical setup that fits the needs of the folks living here in Bakhri.
