Amit Saree Emporium

Amit Saree Emporium is located at No. 52 Shekhjad Gan East in Charthawal. It’s a local shop where we keep a lot of different sarees on the shelves. People from around the area come in mostly when they have a wedding or a festival coming up. We have benches for people to sit on while we pull down different fabrics to show them. The shop isn’t very large, but we try to keep a good variety of colors and materials. Most of our day is spent unfolding sarees to show the patterns and then carefully folding them back up again so they don't get wrinkled. It’s a lot of work with your hands, feeling the silk or the cotton and making sure the borders look right. Charthawal is a quiet place compared to the big cities, so we know most of the families who walk through our door. Sometimes it’s just one person looking for a gift, and other times a whole group comes in and stays for an hour. We have lights that show off the colors, but otherwise, it’s a pretty simple setup. There is usually a pile of plastic covers on the counter because we are always re-packing things. We just keep things moving and try to make sure everyone finds something they like before they head back out to the street.
