Out here in Kalabaria, life revolves around the fields and the seasons. Sefali Rice Mill is located right after the post office in Sarangpur, within the Domkal area of Murshidabad. We are a rice mill, which in this part of Bengal means we stay very busy after the harvest. The mill is a sturdy old building that has survived plenty of monsoons. Inside, you’ll hear the constant clatter of the hullers. We take the paddy from the local farmers and turn it into the rice that people eat every day. It’s not a glamorous job. There is dust everywhere, and it gets incredibly hot inside the shed during the summer months. We don't have a website or a social media page. Most people find us because they’ve lived here their whole lives or they saw the trucks parked outside. We work with a small crew of men who know exactly how to fix the belts when they slip. My family has been involved with this for a long time. We don't talk about "visions" or "goals" much; we just focus on making sure the rice is clean and the bags are the right weight. When the day is done, we lock the big gates and head home to the village. It’s simple work, but it’s what keeps this community moving forward one bag at a time.
