Ganga Rice Mill

The mill is situated right on NH 34 in Sargachi, which is near Berhampur in the Murshidabad district. If you’re driving down the highway, you can usually see the smoke or the grain trucks parked nearby. It’s been our family’s life for a long time. My father used to run things here before I took over the daily operations. We deal with a lot of local farmers from around the area who bring their paddy to us. It is a noisy place, especially when all the machines are running at once, but you get used to the sound after a few days. The weather in Murshidabad can be pretty tough on the grain, so we have to watch the humidity levels quite closely. We don't have a big marketing team or anything like that. Word just gets around the village and the nearby towns. Sometimes the power goes out, and we have to wait around for the generator to kick in, which is always a bit of a headache. The warehouse stays pretty full during the harvest season. We just focus on getting the rice ready and loaded onto the trucks. It’s not a glamorous job, but it’s what we know. The proximity to the highway helps a lot with moving the stock out to other districts. We spend most of our time out on the floor making sure the bags are stacked right and the scales are working. It keeps our hands busy.
