Our place is tucked away in Hati Nagar, over in Berhampore. Murshidabad is famous for silk, so it makes sense we are here. The building is an old one, and the stairs are kind of narrow. We deal with silk and garments mostly. It is a lot of folding and packing into boxes. You see silk threads all over the floor by the end of the shift. The fans are always running but it stays warm because of all the fabric stored around. We have a small team, mostly people from the nearby streets who can walk to work. We don't do much talking while the machines are going. The export side of things means we spend a lot of time labeling bags and making sure the counts are right. It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re staring at the same pattern all afternoon. We have a lot of tea breaks to keep the energy up. The street outside is usually crowded with rickshaws and people going to the market. We've been at this address for a long time now. People in the neighborhood know us as the silk people. It’s not glamorous, just a lot of sitting and standing and checking seams. We just try to keep the piles of cloth from falling over. It’s a steady kind of life here in Berhampore, just working with what we have and getting the shipments ready for whoever needs them.
