The Society Restaurant

You can find The Society Restaurant at Church Gate Block 2, HMT Layout, 6th Cross. It’s a bit of a mouthful of an address. The restaurant is basically a big room with a lot of tables and chairs that don't always match perfectly. We start by setting the napkins and filling up the water jugs. The kitchen gets hot early on, and the noise of the pans starts around eleven. We serve a lot of people who work in the offices nearby. Lunch is our busiest time, and it’s mostly a blur of carrying plates and writing down orders on little slips of paper. The floor is tiled and easy to mop, which is good because spills happen every day. We have a big window that looks out onto the cross, and we see the same people walking to work every morning. The staff is just a few of us who have been here a while. We know which table has the wobbly leg and we put a piece of folded cardboard under it. The menu is printed on some thick paper that’s getting a bit worn at the edges. We don't have a fancy waiting area, people just stand near the door until a seat opens up. It’s a loud, busy place but it’s our job to keep it moving along.
