We are located in the Central Railway Colony in Kurla East. If you know Mumbai, you know Kurla is always moving and never really stays quiet. We are in block 85/5, which is part of the railway staff housing area. It’s a bit of an older building, the kind with the thick walls and the heavy doors. You can hear the trains passing by quite often, but after you’ve been here a few weeks, you just stop noticing the sound. It’s actually pretty convenient being near the station, though the walk from the platform can be a bit of a scramble during rush hour. The colony itself has a lot of trees, which helps with the heat, but the humidity in Mumbai still finds you. We don’t have a fancy corporate office. It’s more like a repurposed space where we keep our files and do our daily work. There is always someone coming or going, usually carrying some paperwork or a lunch tiffin. We share the space and keep things simple. The neighbors are mostly railway families, so it feels very residential and lived-in. It isn’t the kind of place you’d find in a glossy magazine, but it works for us. We just show up, get the work done, and deal with the rains when they come. There’s a small shop around the corner that sells the best vada pav, which is where most of us end up at five o’clock.
