Working at the State Bank Of India in the International Banking Division means we spend our time on the 12th floor of State Bank Bhavan. This is right on Madame Cama Road in Nariman Point. From up here, you can sometimes see the water if the windows are clean and the weather is clear. It’s a big, busy office under the Corporate Centre. We deal with things coming in from all over, but at the end of the day, it’s still just office work. We have rows of desks and a lot of old-fashioned filing systems mixed with computers. The elevators take forever in the morning when everyone is trying to get to their floor. Because it’s the Corporate Centre, things can get a bit serious, but we still have our jokes and tea breaks. The carpet is a bit worn out in the hallways where most people walk. We spend hours looking at international transactions and trying to make sure the numbers match up. Mumbai outside is always moving, and we can hear the muffled sounds of the traffic from twelve floors up. It’s a lot of responsibility but we are just regular people doing our jobs. We bring our tiffin boxes and eat together in the small pantry. It’s just how life is at the main bank building in the heart of the city.
