Smart Kitchens

Running a place like Smart Kitchens in a city like Mumbai is always an adventure. We are located at Shop No 5 in Muktai Residency, over in Chembur West. It’s a busy little pocket of Tilak Nagar, right next to the ICICI Bank and not far from Sahakar Cinema. If you live around here, you know how cramped the apartments can get. That is why we focus so much on kitchens. We spend our days trying to figure out how to squeeze more storage into tiny spaces so people can actually move around while they cook. It’s a lot of measuring and remeasuring. We use the shop mostly as a base to show people different types of shutters and handles. It gets noisy with the traffic outside, but we are used to the Chembur bustle by now. We aren't some big international chain; we’re just local people who know how Mumbai homes work. We deal with the humidity and the small leaks that happen during the monsoon, making sure the materials we use can actually last. Some days everything goes smooth, and other days the delivery truck gets stuck in traffic for three hours. That’s just life in the city, I guess. It’s a bit of a squeeze sometimes, but that’s Mumbai for you. We keep things simple and try to finish the installations without making too much of a mess for the neighbors in the building.
