We are located in Podar Chambers on S A Brelvi Road in the Fort area of Mumbai. This is an old part of the city, and our office definitely shows its age. We’ve been here so long that we still keep P B 711 on our letterhead. The building has those high ceilings and heavy wooden doors that you don’t see in the newer parts of town. It’s usually a bit of a mess with files and papers everywhere. We don’t have central air conditioning, just these old ceiling fans that hum all day. Working at Rk Dewan And Company isn’t like those modern corporate jobs. We deal with legal documents and trademarks, which means a lot of reading and searching through old records. The street outside is always packed with people heading toward the station or grabbing lunch from the street vendors. Sometimes the lift in Podar Chambers breaks down, and we have to walk up the stairs, which is exhausting in the Mumbai humidity. Our staff has been with us for a long time, and we all know each other’s families. We usually eat our lunch together at our desks. It’s a quiet kind of work despite the noise from the traffic outside. We don’t have a big polished lobby to impress anyone. We just focus on getting the filings right and making sure the paperwork is filed on time with the offices nearby. There is always the sound of the city coming through the windows. It’s just how things are in Fort.
