Sindhi Lane is a narrow place. If you’re driving a big vehicle, you’re going to have a hard time getting through. Reliable Pipes & Tubes Ltd. is located at 29-B, Nakoda Bhavan, and it’s right in the thick of the metal trade. You can hear the sound of pipes being loaded and unloaded all day long. It’s a rhythmic kind of noise. Our office in Nakoda Bhavan is small and usually filled with the sound of the ceiling fan and someone talking on the phone about dimensions. We don't have any fancy carpets or modern art on the walls. It’s mostly just shelves full of samples and price lists that are slightly out of date. The air in Sindhi Lane always feels a bit heavy with the smell of iron. We’ve been here long enough that we know most of the other shop owners by their first names. We share news about the market over small cups of cutting chai. It’s not an easy job, moving heavy tubes around in the Mumbai heat, but it’s what we do. Sometimes the rain leaks in a little near the window, and we just put a bucket there. We don't make a big deal out of things. We just stay open, keep the stock moving, and try to make sure we don't mix up the different grades of steel. It’s honest work.
