Ramesh Kumar Lalchand & Co has been based at 184-B for a long time. We are situated near Princess Street in the Kalbadevi area. Anyone who knows this part of town knows how crowded and narrow the lanes can get. It is a very old part of the city. We are surrounded by other old businesses and wholesalers. The noise from the carts and the people shouting can be heard inside all day long. Our office is a simple one. We have old desks and a lot of papers everywhere, but we know where everything is. It’s a bit dusty because of the construction work always going on nearby. Kalbadevi has a specific smell of old paper and spices sometimes. We come in, do our work, and head home like everyone else. Princess Street is just a stone’s throw away, which is convenient for a lot of things. We don't really bother with decorations or making the place look modern. It works for us as it is. Some of the staff have been here for decades. We drink our chai in the afternoon and watch the world go by through the window. It’s a steady kind of life. Being at 184-B feels like being part of the old heart of the city. We just keep going, year after year, in this same spot. It is a bit cramped but it is home.
