Niki Jewels Pvt. Ltd. is located up on the 6th Floor of Mehta Mahal, right on 15 Mathew Road in the Opera House area. If you know Mumbai, you know this is where all the jewelry action is. It’s a tall building and getting the lift can be a bit of a wait sometimes because everyone is always in a hurry. Up here on the sixth floor, it’s a bit more removed from the noise of the street, but it’s still very busy. We spend our days looking at stones and talking to brokers. The office is functional—lots of bright lights so we can see what we’re doing and sturdy desks that have been here for a decade. We don’t have a fancy reception area with flowers; we just have a counter where people sign in. It’s a serious place of work, but we still find time to joke around while we’re sorting through the inventory. Most of the people we deal with have been in the trade as long as we have, so there’s a lot of trust built up over the years. We don’t do much in the way of advertising. Our name gets around just by word of mouth in the building and the surrounding streets. It’s a tight-knit community here in Opera House, and we’re just glad to have our spot in the middle of it. It’s not much to look at, but we get the job done every single day.
