We are tucked into Shop No 1 at the Shiv Om Darshan Society in Kanjur Marg. The shop is right near the Mota Chiloda Char Rasta, so there is always a lot of movement outside our window. Our morning routine involves checking the temperature of the display units and making sure the bread and cakes are fresh. The society residents usually stop by in the afternoon to pick up something for tea time. It’s a small space, but we manage to fit a lot of inventory onto the shelves. We spend a good part of the day folding cardboard boxes and getting them ready for customers. The counter is usually covered in crumbs by the end of the day, so we do a lot of cleaning as we go. We don't have a big team, just a couple of us who take turns standing at the front and helping people decide what to buy. Sometimes the delivery truck gets stuck in traffic at the Char Rasta, which throws our whole schedule off, but we just wait it out. It’s a quiet life for the most part, except for when the school nearby lets out and we get a sudden rush of kids wanting chocolate treats. We just focus on keeping the shop running and making sure the lights stay on for whoever needs a quick snack. It’s a practical little shop for the neighborhood.
