If you walk past the Dockyard station in Mazgoan, you will see us right there at Shop Number 6 in the Meenakshi Apartments. It’s a tight space, but hardware stores usually are. We have drawers full of screws, nails, and all sorts of metal bits that most people don’t even know the names for. The shelves go all the way up to the ceiling. I have to use a shaky wooden ladder to reach the paint cans or the heavy wrenches on the top row. It’s always a bit dark in the back of the shop, no matter how many bulbs we put in.
The street outside is never still. You have the noise from the trains and the people rushing to catch them. We get a lot of walk-ins, people looking for a specific washer or a bulb that stopped working. Half the time they don't have the part with them, so we have to guess. It’s a lot of standing around and talking to the regulars who live in the apartments above. The floor is concrete and has some cracks, but it’s sturdy. We keep the counter clear for the heavy items. Sometimes the cat from next door comes in and sleeps on the bags of cement. We don't mind much. It’s just a local shop doing what a hardware place does in a busy part of town.
