Our business, M.H. Karbawala & Co., is located right in the middle of the chaos that is Zaveri Bazar. We are at number 81 on S.K. Memon Street. Being so close to the Mumbadevi Temple means we hear the bells and see the crowds of devotees every single day. It’s a very old part of the city, and our building has that historic feel to it. The streets are narrow and always packed with people looking for jewelry and metals. Inside our space, it’s a bit calmer than the street, but still very busy. We deal with customers and traders all day long in this small corner of the market. There is a lot of history in these walls, and you can feel it when you walk in. We don’t have modern glass walls or fancy carpets; it’s a traditional setup that has worked for us for a long time. Everything is about the trade here. We keep our ledgers and handle our transactions just like they’ve been done for generations in Zaveri Bazar. The atmosphere is thick with the history of commerce in Mumbai. It’s loud, it’s crowded, and it’s where we belong. You get used to the sounds of the scooters and the shouting of vendors right outside the door. It is just another day of work for us in this famous neighborhood, keeping the tradition going as best as we can.
